The first month of this course focuses on character animation (primarily bipedal human)
and students will create animation cycles for different actions (walk, run, jump, attack,
idle, etc.). These cycles will later become important aspects of students' portfolios and
the instructor will provide feedback to make sure the timing, weight, and exaggeration of
movement is well executed. Pre-made rigs will be provided so students can focus purely on
the movement and timing of the character without getting bogged down in technical details.
The second month focuses on monster and creature animation. Students will learn how
to find and use reference of real animals as a basis for bringing life and believability
to fictional creatures. The assignments will be to create animations that capture the
emotions, personality, and gameplay requirements for a specific creature. Actions like
special attacks, knockdowns, taunts, idles, and deaths are good examples of the kinds
of things you'll be doing in this class.
The final month is geared towards polishing all previous class assignments for the
students' demo reels. Examples of good animation portfolios will be shown so that
students have a quality bar to strive for. Critique sessions and instructor
feedback are the most important aspects of this final stage in the program. Once
the assignments are deemed portfolio-quality, students are encouraged to set up a
portfolio website featuring their Animation for Games demo reel.
